To Embellish Your Lap Blanket or Not?

I found the pattern for this gorgeous combination stitch online and liked it so much I made a lap blanket using white, cotton yarn.

However, I’ve reached the end of the project and now I’m torn.  Do I add some flowers to embellish it or not?

I’ve never crocheted roses before but I watched  a video tutorial on a style I think would work but I question whether adding anything to this would just be overkill or not.

And then it dawned on me that the real question isn’t whether I should or not but, really, would the added flowers be in sync with the end purpose of the blanket?

Initially this was going to be given to my step-daughter’s new niece but once I made it past about 10 rows I could see how little hands might get stuck in the open pattern.  Adding some extra color – pink or red – would have been perfect for a baby, though.  I think it would have made the blanket more unique and more of a keepsake.

Now, though, I intend to give it to my mother for Christmas and I’m hoping it will keep her warm on the sofa when she gets the few chances she does to curl up with a good book.  (She’s a busy woman!)

For daily use, the flowers might just become a nuisance.  They might get snagged on her jewelry or the buttons on her clothes.

And that’s how I’ve arrived at my final decision.  No flowers.  But maybe I’ll add some fringe to the edges….(I think the real issue is that I don’t want the project to end!)

How do you make decisions about whether or not to add more to your crochet projects?
